Carmichaels Borough, PA, September 11, 2025. The Ellen O’Brien Gaiser Addiction Center (Gaiser Center) will expand services for the first time in nearly 55 years with a medically monitored detox facility in Carmichaels Borough, Greene County, opening in late fall of 2025.
The new 10-bed facility will serve adults 18 and older and will operate as a level 3.7 withdrawal management center, the only program of its kind in Greene County. Residents currently travel 30 minutes or more for comparable treatment, with some needing to cross into West Virgina or Ohio. The Greene County facility will bring safe, medically supported detox services closer to home.
“Alcohol and certain substances can be dangerous to stop without medical oversight,” said Joe Mahoney, Executive Director of the Gaiser Center. “This facility gives Greene County residents a safe, medically monitored path to begin treatment.”
The facility will provide round-the-clock medical care for patients. Nurses will be on-site, and Dr. Charles Thomas Brophy will provide regular oversight. All care received by patients will follow evidence-based protocols for withdrawal from substances such as alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines.
Project support includes a grant from the Staunton Farm Foundation. The grant will help supply the facility with trauma-informed and harm-reduction equipment and furnishings, improving the overall environment for care.
“This grant enables us to purchase the necessary materials and supplies, ensuring our clients have the best experience from the outset of their journey with us in this new program. Without the financial support of Staunton Farm Foundation and their commitment to recovery, we would not be able to offer the high-quality services we have prided ourselves on for the past 55 years,” said Mahoney.
The facility aims to provide a safe, trauma-informed environment that fosters healing, personal growth, and long-term recovery through a continuum of care grounded in dignity, equity, and individualized support.
Additional details about the opening timeline and services will be shared on Gaiser Center’s website and social media pages as construction progresses.
