Gaiser Center to Oversee Addiction Treatment Program in Greene County Prison

BUTLER, Pa. (March 26, 2024) − The Ellen O’Brien Gaiser Center will provide medication management and counseling services to inmates at Greene County Prison in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, aiding incarcerated individuals with addictions as they prepare for a healthy reentry to society.

Greene County received a two-year grant through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency to fund Medication Assisted Treatment and therapy services at the prison.

The Gaiser Center is an established leader in MAT, which employs prescription medications to help treat issues related to substance use disorders. Gaiser Medical Director C. Thomas Brophy, DO, a board-certified addiction medicine and emergency medicine physician with expertise in the rapidly expanding field of MAT, began training prison staff about the process last month.

“This new relationship builds upon our success with treating inmates at Butler County Prison and further establishes Gaiser as a valuable regional resource in addiction treatment and recovery,” said Gaiser Executive Director Joe Mahoney.

“Our successful track record with using MAT in combination with addiction counseling and educational support enables us to assist clients with a holistic approach that provides the best chance at lasting recovery.”

Recognized among a select number of facilities statewide by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, Gaiser is a Center of Excellence for inpatient treatment of opioid use disorders. Centers of Excellence are designed not only to treat individuals for addiction, but to improve their overall health and wellbeing, coordinating care across multiple domains.

This multidisciplinary treatment encompassing physical, mental and behavioral health issues along with a host of social issues is ideal for addressing various challenges incarcerated individuals will face as they leave prison.

“Addressing addiction issues is critical to our mission of supporting inmate accountability and successful community integration,” said Prison Deputy Warden Jerad Cline. “We’re committed to partnering with skilled service providers like the Gaiser Center to meet the needs of inmates and assist them in their return to living as productive citizens.”
